Tutorial; Vintage Family Canvas

One present done...a billion more to do!

Long story short... my in-laws are heading to see family this weekend and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to save some postage!  So in a matter of hours I had this whipped for Christmas a present.  This dawned on me late this morning.  I had no canvas and no Ornate Frame!  A quick shopping trip and no clue what I was making!  Here's where I ended up.

Check it out!

How do I line up the photo to fit the center?  Pfft...line up the paper one where you want it on the photo then line it up again to the die.  Remove the paper frame and cut!
Works like a charm!
I cut out all the frames and pediments with chipboard.  Line up the photo's and I'm ready to go.

Ink the photo's with vintage photo.  My laser printer likes peels the ink off.  Normally this would drive me nuts, but it really works with the distressing.  All those non-inky bits grab the vintage photo.
Ink the frames with the black soot ink pad.  Use a twisting motion to really get it in there.
Applying glossy accents with your finger right onto the frames.

Once it's coated add the distress glitter.  I made two sets, black soot and pumice stone.

Great time to use up your scraps.  I also cut the Cameo Frame with chipboard.  Glue some of the paper to it.

Get inky and ink up that paper.  I tore the ends off one sheet.

Don't miss an opportunity to use stencils.
I went to the $1 Store and picked up these great small canvas with easel.  They measure 7"x 4 1/2".

Don't miss inking these.  I put old paper stain just on the edges.  Then some distress ink, vintage photo and walnut stain.  Save your stains and inks and stick to the edges.

I put walnut stain and antique linen stain on the craft mat and spritz with water.

Drag your paper through.  To intensify the colour I added the walnut stain right onto the kraft resist paper.
Spritz with water to blend the stain.
Then dry.  To get a worn leather look dry and blot with the remaining stain right onto your mat picking up those droplets of stain.  Keep doing this until you're happy...or you run out of stain.

Looks like old leather!

While you have your stains out ink your crinkle ribbon.  A little water spritzed on the stained ribbon blends the stain.

Time to accessorize.  Use what ever you have in your stash.  I just got the writing desk die and wanted to play.  I used walnut stain distress paint on the jar, sand and then ink it up with black soot distress ink.  Adding some remnant rubs make these fun.

Start layering all your paper and frames.  Then add all your goodies.

I attached the pediment with the tiny attacher.  You could cover up the metal bits but I love the little metal staples.

I sometimes have to be careful not to over load these things.  Especially when they are traveling! I wanted to add pine cones, greenery, more die cuts, tickets, stamping, metal bits.  Seriously, it was heard to stop!

I cut the feather with watercolour paper.  The creamy texture paper is perfect feather material.  I inked the feather with walnut stain and black soot.  I then used my blender pen to smooth the ink.

I used a pen nib for the feather...had to be done.  Then I attached some film strip.

The inked ribbon is thread through the word band and attached with the tiny attacher.  Fray the ends a little.

And yep, I made 2!

The money I saved with postage I was able to pick up the ornate frame...which I've been waiting to get;)  Although, honestly once I have it in mind to create something I just go for it.  And for me the frame is key!  These are all wrapped with Christmas paper and topped with a bow!

Thanks for popping in:)

  6. Hey again Nicole! Thanks for the sweet comment that you left on my blog. I'm sure your perpetual calendar will be better than mine!!! That is so exciting that you have all the stuff!!! Just adjust your chipboard sizes to fit the sizes of your blocks. I think a little larger one would be way cool...I just didn't have them handy when I sat down to make this one...so it is what it is! :) Have fun making it! It's really fun! <3 Candy
