1st Post of the year- Vintage Suitcases

Welcome 2014!!!

To start the New Year off creatively I threw a little something together...a stack of vintage suitcases!  For Christmas I got a stacked gift basket of these boxes, 3 cardboard and 2 tin full of goodies.  Long story short, my husband removed some stereo equipment including a big sub woofer leaving a gaping hole in my entertainment center.  I had these 3 boxes stack and it dawned on me...stacked suitcases!  They would be perfect in this now big hole he's left me.

Here are the gift boxes before and the supplies I picked up to make them into suitcases.  I've always wanted to make some suitcase so it was fun!  But it had some challenges.

I measured and cut Glassine, grungepaper and paper for each box.  The Glassine is a little see through so I layered some Kraft paper under there.

I cut the hinge from the hardware findings die with grungepaper...on my new VAGABOND!
The boxes are glossy so it was a bit of a nightmare getting anything to stick even after sanding. I ended up using modge podge and spray adhesive.
I assembled the papers to each box.  I had some canvas scrap so I cut some strips and inked.  Using washi tape for the edges and strips is quick and easy.  Add embellishments.
Adding layers of different materials like paper, glassine, grungepaper and canvas really make these boxes transform.

I have this "CANADA" patch that was in my grandmothers button stash.  It almost looks military and old!  I've been holding onto it for the right project.

I put a lot of hardware on each box. I used some idea-ology, rivets and these upholstery tacks.  The grungepaper looks like leather painted with walnut stain and crackle!
I cut the key hole from the hardware findings in the mirrored paper then I hot glued this journey key.  It appears to be in the key hole:)
Using all the textured materials and hardware really make it feel vintage!
The glassine has the feel of worn leather.
Each "suitcase" has it's own personality!
Thanks for checking out my first post of 2014.

I've entered this in the "something new" Simon Says Stamps Wednesday Challenge.  My new is my vagabond Santa brought me.  Cutting with this electric machine was lovely!
